Summer holidays offer a perfect chance for children to explore new experiences beyond their usual routines. This year, O Sentai hold a unique summer camp that brought together kids from different ages, schools, and states to embark on a food education journey surrounded by nature. Set in forest neighbor, the camp combined outdoor activities with lessons about food, nutrition, culture, and the environment. This immersive experience helped children develop essential life skills while deepening their appreciation for the food they eat and the world around them.

Exploring Nature and Building Basic Skills

The camp started with children stepping into a natural environment filled with trees, flowers, insects, and a nearby river. This exposure to nature was more than just a backdrop; it became a living classroom where kids could connect with the environment firsthand.

Alongside nature exploration, the camp focused on teaching basic life skills. Children practiced preparing food, cooking simple meals, and doing dishes independently. These activities encouraged self-reliance and confidence, especially since they had to manage without their parents nearby. The hands-on approach made learning practical and fun, showing kids how to take care of themselves in everyday situations.

Understanding Food and Nutrition, Exploring New Things

A key part of the camp was helping children understand the relationship between food, nutrition, culture, and the environment. Interactive lessons introduced concepts like the food pyramid and the healthy plate, making nutrition easy to grasp. Kids played games related to foods and how to make them a balanced meal, which reinforced their learning in an engaging way.

The camp also highlighted the encouragement in exploring different foods. Children tasted ingredients and dishes they had never tried before, such as broccoli soup and spaghetti sauce made with gag fruit. Learning about healthier ways to make desserts, like ice cream, showed them that nutritious choices can still be delicious.

Encouraging Respect for Food and the Environment

One memorable moment was movie time, where children watched a film that emphasized the importance of not wasting food. This message connected food appreciation with environmental care, encouraging kids to think about how their actions affect the planet. The camp reinforced that food is a valuable resource that deserves respect.

A special DIY session taught children how to make natural mosquito repellent using wormwood. This activity combined creativity with practical knowledge, showing kids how to use natural resources responsibly. It also encouraged them to share their thoughts and experiences, culminating in a group poster presentation that summarized their feeling, learning and reflections.

Whole New Experiences in Nature

The camp’s BBQ session was a highlight for many children, especially those experiencing it for the first time. Eating together outdoors created a joyful atmosphere and strengthened a sense of community. This experience helped children understand the connection between food, social interaction, and enjoyment.

Swimming in the river was another precious moment, allowing children to immerse themselves in nature in a way that is very different from a swimming pool. It became both a fun activity with friends and a meaningful connection to the natural environment. Spending the night in tents with friends was yet another exciting new experience, giving many children the chance to try something unfamiliar, build independence, and create lasting memories.

Lasting Impact of Food Education

This summer camp was more than just a fun getaway; it was a meaningful journey that aimed to shape how children view food and their environment. By combining nature exploration, nutrition education, cultural experiences, and practical skills, the camp helped kids build a foundation for healthy living and environmental awareness.

The hope is that these experiences will inspire children to value food, develop useful skills, and appreciate the environment throughout their lives. Food education like this supports children in making informed choices and living well, both now and in the future.
