Top 15 Winners of Tourism Authority of Sydney's Sustainable Tourism Project Competition
(Shah Alam 14) Tourism Selangor has been supporting the green initiatives and sustainable development projects implemented by the tourism industry in Selangor. In order to step up the promotion efforts, the Selangor government has organized the Tourism Selangor Pitching Competition 2023 through Tourism Selangor.
"The Sustainable Tourism Pitching Competition was launched on July 2 this year and 62 pitches were received from private organizations and groups. The competition was open to local tourism operators, cultural entrepreneurs, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations. Twenty-five high-potential finalists were selected to compete in the final round of the competition. The judges presented their pitches and selected the 15 winners of this year's competition, who will each receive a RM10,000 grant for the implementation of their pitches as well as a certificate for their participation in the competition.
The Sustainable Tourism Business Plan Competition featured 17 United Nations goals that are relevant to Selangor. These goals include the following:
1) Eradicate Poverty
2) Eradicate hunger
3) Promote health and well-being
4) Provide quality education
5) Achieving gender equality
6) Ensure clean water and sanitation
7) Promote affordable and clean energy
8) Promote decent work and economic development
9) Promote industry, innovation and infrastructure
10) Reduce Inequality
11) Build sustainable cities and communities
12) Promoting Responsible Consumption and Production
13) Taking Climate Action
14) Protecting Underwater Ecosystems
15) Protect Terrestrial Ecosystems
16) Maintaining Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
17) Partnerships for Goal Achievement
Tourism Selangor Pitching Competition 2023 was judged by five judges: Dr. Loo Chuan Boon, Chief Operating Officer of Selangor IT and Digital Economy Corporation (SIDEC), Dr. Ahmad Azri, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility Department of Selangor Ministerial Agency, Dr. Amran Hamzah, Professor of Tourism Planning at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Dr. Kelantar Sahib, Director of Tourism Selangor Pitching Competition 2023. The five judges for the Selangor Pitching Competition 2023 were: Selangor IT and Digital Economy Agency (SIDEC) Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Loo Chuan Boon; Selangor Ministerial Agency (SMAS) Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Mr. Ahmad Azri; Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Professor of Tourism Planning, Mr. Dr. Amran Hamzah; Selangor Tourism Board (STB) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Azrul Shah; and Selangor Tourism Board (STB) Manager of Industrial Development, Mr. Chua Yee Lin.
Elin Chua, Manager of Industry Development Department of the Syarikat Tourism Board, expressed hopefully that the Syarikat Tourism Board Project Competition, which has been conducted for three consecutive years, has not only become an excellent platform for pitching, but has also brought in many enthusiastic and talented teams to help Syarikat Tourism flourish. The talented teams will help drive the growth of tourism in the state. This year, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been chosen as the theme, and she sincerely hopes that it will inspire an awakening of the power to advocate for a more responsible and sustainable tourism model. She is pleased with this year's competition because she has seen so many programs that have come up with promising ideas with great potential."
Elin Chua, Manager of Industry Development Department of the Syarikat Tourism Board, expressed hopefully that the Syarikat Tourism Board Project Competition, which has been conducted for three consecutive years, has not only become an excellent platform for pitching, but has also brought in many enthusiastic and talented teams to help Syarikat Tourism flourish. The talented teams will help drive the growth of tourism in the state. This year, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has been chosen as the theme, and she sincerely hopes that it will inspire an awakening of the power to advocate for a more responsible and sustainable tourism model. She is pleased with this year's competition because she has seen so many programs that have come up with promising ideas with great potential."
Dr. Amran Hamza, one of the judges, also said that organizing the business plan competition is an excellent program to promote the development of cooperation between the state government and private tourism players. Seeking creative tourism plans through open bidding will greatly benefit the development of tourism.
Last but not least, Mr. Azlan Shah, Chief Executive Officer of the Tourism Authority of the State of Syarikat said that the competition has become an important annual event for the Tourism Authority of the State of Syarikat. This year's Sustainable Tourism Project Competition will help promote the sustainable development of tourism in the state. He expressed his gratitude to the participants for their hard work and creativity, and looked forward to seeing how these ideas would bring new breakthroughs and growth to the tourism industry in the state.
